What to bring to the Emergency Department
If you are experiencing a life threatening emergency dial 911.
If you have time to prepare before you go to the ER, here is a list of things you should bring to make your experience better.
- Your ID.
- Your health insurance card.
- List of your current medications, including dosages.
- Primary care doctor name.
- If you are coming in because of abnormal labs, have a copy of the lab results.
These are fundamental items to have when you come to the ER.
When you come in:
- You will be registered, where you need your ID and insurance card.
- You will be triaged, which will assign you a level of severity.
- Now waiting, which is frustrating. Please note, that patients are seen by severity not by order of presentation. The sickest go first.
- Depending on the ER, you might have blood and / or urine taken for laboratory studies. You might also have imaging studies done, such as xrays or CT scans. Note: MRIs are not provided in most ERs, except for 2 very rare instances.
- When you speak to a doctor or nursing staff, be honest about your problem.
Being in the ER is stressful and can be a frightening experience. If you ever have any questions do not hesitate to ask.
All the best,
